Muscle co-ordination of the respiratory pump of the carp (Cyprinus Carpio L.).

چکیده

Since the beginning of the eighteenth century investigators have attempted to understand the mechanism of the respiration of fishes. Some have studied the driving elements of the respiratory pumps, the muscles, and others have analysed the outcome of the pumping movements, i.e. the pressures developed in buccal and opercular cavities. In the latter category Hughes & Shelton (1957, 1958, 1962) extensively described the hydrodynamics of the respiratory pumps of some fish species, using electrical manometers with a fast response. Saunders (1961) also studied the pressure changes in the buccal and opercular cavities of fishes, but he made use of tambour manometers. After the studies on the muscle co-ordination of the respiratory system based upon anatomical data only (discussed in a previous article (Ballintijn, 1969 a)) a better insight has been gained as a result of extirpation experiments, which among others have been conducted by Henschel (1939, 1941) and Holmquist (1910). The extirpation method, however, still is not ideally suited for the problem, because the function of an extirpated element can be (and often is) taken over by another, thus suggesting that the extirpated part is unimportant. The electromyographic technique, because it makes possible the exact determination of the active period of many muscles at the same time without seriously interfering with the system under observation, is ideally suited for the study of movement co-ordination. Hughes & Shelton (1962) and Ballintijn (1965) used intramuscular electrodes for the analysis of the respiratory mechanism of fish. Since then more detailed studies on the muscle co-ordination of the trout (Ballintijn & Hughes, 1965) and of the dogfish (Hughes & Ballintijn, 1965) have been conducted. In the present investigation the respiratory mechanism of the carp is analysed using electromyography. It was started because an exact knowledge of the muscle coordination of the carp is necessary to explain the data of experiments on the central nervous respiratory system (Ballintijn, unpublished).

Functional anatomy and movement co-ordination of the respiratory pump of the carp (Cyprinus carpio L.).

The evaluation of the movement co-ordination of fish respiratory systems has attracted many investigators (Baglioni, 1907, 1910; van Dobben, 1935; Kirchhoff, 1958; Willem, 1931, 1940, 1947; Woskoboinikoff, 1932). For a long time the theories of the functioning of the system were only based upon anatomical data. It is hardly surprising that this has led to conflicting theories in many cases wher...

Utilization of the Ethanol Pathway in Carp following Exposure to Anoxia

1. Crucian carp (Carassius carassius L.) and Common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) were subjected to 2h progressive hypoxia followed by up to 6 h anoxia in closed respirometers at 15 °C. 2. The concentrations of glycogen, glucose, phosphoryl creatine, alanine, succinate, lactate, ethanol and ammonia were determined in whole Crucian carp following exposure to both hypoxia and anoxia. 3. Ethanol and l...

Mercury concentrations in common carp (Cyprinus carpio) tissues, sediment and water from fish farm along the Karoun River in Iran

The Karoun River is major source of water for warm‌water fish culture industry in southwest of Iran. The aim of the present study was to investigate the distribution of mercury in tissues of marketable common carp and in bottom sediments of fish farms in Khouzestan province. This study was carried out on 45 fish farms that are located on the bank of the Karoun River in Khouzestan province, sout...

Study of iron bioaccumulation and histopathology of muscle, skin and scale of common carp (Cyprinus carpio) following exposed to iron oxide nanoparticles

Increasing development of nanotechnology and the production of nanostructured materials have led to many nanoparticles enter into the environment. Iron oxide nanoparticles are one of the most widely used nanomaterial that their widespread application has been accompanied with concern. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the iron bioaccumulation and histopathology in the muscle, skin and s...

The Effect of Adding Protein-Xanthophylls Concentrate (PX) from Lucerne (Medicago sativa) on Growth Parameters and Redox Profile in Muscles of carp, Cyprinus carpio (L.)

The effect of adding protein xanthophyll from lucerne (PX) on growth parameters and the redox profile of carp muscle Cyprinus carpio (L.) was studied. During a 10-week experiment, carp were kept in two types of tanks: Control, where fish were fed a commercial fish feed, and in experimental tanks (PX+), where the fish were fed the same fish feed with a 5% addition protein xanthophyll from lucern...
